Institutional breakdown of Apex Trader Funding rules: Intraday unrealized peak trailing threshold formula, the giveback trap, threshold freeze at $100, and the 30% PA consistency rule.
Apex Trader Funding operates with distinct rules that separate it from traditional End-of-Day (EOD) prop firms. The defining risk mechanism is the Intraday Unrealized Peak Trailing Threshold.
Understanding the mathematical behavior of this threshold—along with Performance Account (PA) consistency rules and trade management constraints—is vital to maintaining an active account.
| Rule Parameter | Evaluation Account | Performance Account (PA) |
|---|---|---|
| Drawdown Model | Live Intraday Peak Trailing | Live Intraday Peak Trailing |
| Threshold Freeze Level | Starting Balance + $100 | Starting Balance + $100 |
| Daily Loss Limit | None on standard evaluations | None (Monitored via MAE rule) |
| Consistency Requirement | None (0% rule) | 30% Windfall / Consistency Rule |
| Minimum Trading Days | 0 Days (Pass in 1 day) | 8 to 10 trading days per payout cycle |
| Session Flat Deadline | 4:59 PM ET | 4:59 PM ET |
| Overnight / Weekend Holding | Strictly Prohibited | Strictly Prohibited |
| Max Concurrent Accounts | Unlimited evaluations | Maximum 20 active Performance Accounts |
On standard Apex accounts, the trailing threshold recalculates tick-by-tick against your highest unrealized equity peak.
Apex Threshold(t) = max(Apex Threshold(t-1), Highest Unrealized Peak Equity(t) - Drawdown Amount)
Unlike EOD trailing (which updates only after the market closes at 5:00 PM ET), Apex moves your liquidation floor upward mid-trade the millisecond your position moves into profit.
The live trailing threshold creates a unique failure mode known as the Giveback Trap:
Starting Account: $50,000 | Trailing Drawdown: $2,500 | Initial Liquidation Floor: $47,500
1. Buy 3 NQ contracts. Trade runs into +$3,000 open unrealized profit.
Peak Floating Equity: $53,000
New Trailing Threshold Floor: $53,000 - $2,500 = $50,500
2. Market encounters resistance, reverses, and pulls back.
You exit the trade manually at +$800 closed profit.
New Realized Account Balance: $50,800
3. Trailing Threshold DOES NOT move down. It remains locked at $50,500.
Remaining Loss Buffer: $50,800 - $50,500 = Exactly $300!
The Consequence: Despite making an $800 realized profit on the day, the trader now has only $300 of risk cushion remaining before account termination. A subsequent standard pullback of just 15 points on NQ will breach the account.
The trailing threshold does not trail upward indefinitely. It permanently caps when it reaches:
Threshold Freeze Level = Initial Starting Balance + $100
Once your account balance pushes the threshold to Starting Balance + $100, all future profits generate pure safety cushion. If your $50K account climbs to $56,000, your liquidation floor remains permanently fixed at $50,100, giving you an open $5,900 risk cushion.
On Performance Accounts (PAs), Apex enforces a 30% Consistency Rule to prevent traders from requesting payouts based on a single gambling trade.
Highest Net Profit Day / Total Accumulated Profit Since Last Payout <= 0.30
$2,400 / $6,000 = 40% (Exceeds 30% Threshold)
Required Total Profit = $2,400 / 0.30 = $8,000
The trader must earn an additional $2,000 in disciplined profits across subsequent sessions to bring the $2,400 day down to 30% of total gains.
