News trading — opening or holding positions during high-impact economic releases like NFP, CPI, or FOMC — is one of the most debated strategies in prop trading. Many firms restrict it because news events cause extreme volatility, slippage, and spread widening that can exploit the difference between simulated and live execution. Restrictions typically work as a "window" (e.g., no new trades 2 minutes before and after a red-folder event), but some firms allow it completely.
