News trading — opening or holding positions during high-impact economic releases like NFP, CPI, or FOMC — is one of the most debated strategies in prop trading. Many firms restrict it because news events cause extreme volatility, slippage, and spread widening that can exploit the difference between simulated and live execution. Restrictions typically work as a "window" (e.g., no new trades 2 minutes before and after a red-folder event), but some firms allow it completely. If news trading is part of your strategy, choosing the right firm is critical — trading news on a restricted firm will get you failed.
Usually high-impact events only: NFP, CPI, FOMC, ECB. Medium-impact events are typically allowed. Check Forex Factory red-folder events.
Common windows: 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or "no new positions" during events. Holding existing positions through news is often allowed.
Even when allowed, expect 3-10 pip slippage during NFP. Use limit orders, not market orders, for better fills.
Some firms allow news trading during evaluation but restrict it on funded accounts. Always check both policies.
