Hedging on prop firm accounts involves holding simultaneous buy and sell positions on the same instrument (or correlated instruments) to manage risk. While hedging is a legitimate risk management technique, many prop firms restrict or ban it because it can be used to exploit drawdown calculation methods. Firms that allow hedging offer more strategic flexibility for advanced traders. Compare hedging-friendly firms below.
Direct hedging = buy + sell same pair. Correlated hedging = long EURUSD + long USDCHF. Firms may treat these differently.
Check how the firm calculates drawdown on hedged positions — some use net exposure, others use gross.
Some platforms enforce FIFO (First In, First Out), making direct hedging impossible. Check platform compatibility.
Holding opposing positions still incurs swap costs on both sides, which can erode profits over time.
When choosing a prop firm for hedging, look for: Hedging explicitly allowed, No restrictions on opposite positions, Clear policy on correlated instrument hedging, No "account manipulation" flags for hedging, FIFO not enforced.

Prop firms draw a clear line between same-account direct hedging and cross-account hedging. Direct hedging (holding long and short positions simultaneously on the same symbol) is permitted by leading firms such as FTMO, The 5%ers, and Funding Pips to give discretionary traders risk-management flexibility. Conversely, cross-account hedging—where a trader takes opposite positions on two accounts to guarantee passing one while sacrificing the other—is classified as malicious arbitrage and results in immediate disqualification across the entire industry.
The most frequent way prop traders fail challenges while hedged is the daily rollover spread spike at 5:00 PM EST (22:00 UTC). When market makers widen spreads, the ask price rises and the bid price drops simultaneously. On a fully hedged position, both legs register temporary floating losses against your equity. If your floating equity drops below the firm's daily maximum drawdown limit even for a single millisecond, the account is automatically breached.
Confirm that the prop firm's FAQ explicitly allows same-account hedging and does not classify opposite trades as toxic flow.
Select MetaTrader 5 or cTrader accounts where independent opposing tickets can be opened without automatic FIFO netting.
Ensure your account has at least a 1.5% to 2% equity cushion above daily drawdown limits before holding opposing trades through 5:00 PM EST.
Check financing rates on both buy and sell legs to prevent continuous swap deductions from eroding your profit target.
Never execute hedging between two different challenge accounts or across different proprietary firms to avoid automated IP and trade correlation flags.
