Retail Sales measures the change in the total value of sales at the retail level. It is the primary gauge of consumer spending, which accounts for the majority of overall economic activity in the US. Strong retail sales signal economic growth, often leading to a stronger USD and lower gold prices.
Always check "Core Retail Sales" (excluding automobiles). Auto sales are highly volatile and can distort the underlying trend.
Retail sales data is notoriously subject to large revisions. The market will often react to a revision of the previous month's data as much as the current month's print.
The November, December, and January reports (covering the holiday shopping season) are the most closely watched and volatile releases of the year.
