Released weekly by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), this report measures the change in the number of barrels of commercial crude oil held by US firms. It is the single most important recurring event for crude oil traders, causing massive immediate volatility in WTI and Brent crude markets.
Oil prices often spike 50-100 pips within seconds of the release. Avoid market orders exactly at 10:30 AM due to extreme slippage.
Because Canada is a major oil exporter, the Canadian Dollar (CAD) is highly correlated with oil prices. USDCAD often sees significant volatility during the EIA release.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) releases its own private inventory estimate on Tuesday afternoons. Traders use this to set expectations for Wednesday's official EIA data.
